Cambridge Ice Arena

Donations and a loan mean the project is almost full funded. The lease for the land has been negotiated with the site owner Marshall Group Properties. The negotiations with the operator are concluded.

The full planning application for the venue was submitted in March 2015 and granted in June 2015. The exhaustive business modelling has confirmed the long-term financial sustainability of the Cambridge Ice Arena. And with CLIC’s development partner, Cool Venues, the supply chain is in place and all costs confirmed.

The Cambridge Ice Arena will provide ice facilities for all ages and abilities. A bespoke array of training and development programs and leisure activities will be developed with the input of local communities, schools, organisations and individuals.

The many organisations we have engaged with include the Parish Councils of Fen Ditton and Teversham, Abbey People, Cambridge Cycle Campaign and Cambridge Past, Present and Future.

Full access for disabled users is assured, together with a range of skating activities. Exercise sessions for the over 50s and educational programs further illustrate the depth and breadth of the positive contribution the ice arena will make to life in the city.

Local employment opportunities will be created both during construction and operation of the venue. Situated just a mile from the new Cambridge railway station and right beside the Newmarket Road Park ‘n Ride and cycle routes, the rink is perfectly located for ease of access and long term sustainability. The project aims to be operational in 2017.

The proposed venue is as much about creating a community facility and local opportunity as it is about providing exciting leisure and sport ice-related activities to rival any equivalent in the world. CLIC invites you to engage with this project.

This site will be updated regularly and we want to incorporate your opinion into how the operational programme develops. Please take a moment now to give us your comments.

  1. This is long overdue in Cambridge. The temporary ice rink introduced our daughter to ice skating and we now travel 3 times a week to Peterborough for coaching. There must be many others who were also inspired but are unable to make the time and financial commitment we have had to make as a family. A local training facility that is 10 mins away would be fantastic.

  2. Fantastic news, we really want this facility as the nearest is Peterborough. We all love ice skating but generally only go when the temporary rinks are set up at Christmas. Brilliant – looking forward to booking some lessons too.

  3. Cambridge Ice Arena would be a very welcomed idea. I have a strong background in figure skating both competing and coaching. Since we moved to Cambridge it has been a struggle to find the time to travel to Peterborough. I would love to teach my boys how to skate too, and it is a great sport to all ages!

  4. It is great news that this could be up and running next year! We are also going to Peterborough every week for figure lessons but don’t know how much more we can commit to this to support my kids in their progress. A local rink would be fantastic and allow much more time on the ice for all of us. Thank you!

  5. Is CLIC planning on managing the rink themselves or will there be a third party managing it and if so, do you know who it will be?

Also could you advise me of what level figure skating coaches you will be looking to employ?

    Thank you 🙂

    1. Hello Dezzie, there will be an Operator who will manage the Cambridge Ice Arena and at this stage we can not disclose who it will be. The aim of the Arena is that it will be available for all levels from beginner to expert, so we expect the Operator will be employing coaches to teach all levels. Once the Operator is confirmed it will be announced on the website, Facebook (Cambridge Ice Arena – a community-led initiative) and Twitter (@CambsIceArena). Kind Regards, CIA

  6. Every week my parents drive me down to Peterborough on a Monday and Wednesday. Then I get up at 4:30 for a 6:00 start on the ice. I know some people how skate at Peterborough how life in Cambridge and like me are very, very, very pleased that a rink is being build in Cambridge, and we cannot wait for it to open!

  7. I can’t wait for the Cambridge ice rink to open its doors. The is a company that has a monopoly across the East and the Midlands, having closed several ribks and brought law suits against thdir management, and it would be great if the Cambridge rink could be run in a fair and open way by a new provider to the area.

    1. Hello Anne, thank you for your comments, apologies for the delay in getting back to you. Regarding a previous comment, negotiations are still on-going with potential operators, CLIC are keen to include as many ice sports that the public demands, which will be available for the broader community as possible.

With regards to NISA courses, we intend for Cambridge Ice Arena to provide for all from beginners to the experienced, so we trust the operator will provide NISA qualified coaches.

      Kind Regards, CIA

  9. Fantastic news that planning permission was granted earlier in the year, is there any update on the current progress of the project? Has an operational partner been selected? when is the construction phase likely to start? and is there any more detail on a likely opening date?

I look forward to more details being provided soon.

  11. I am really looking forward to this rink opening. Travelling to Peterborough Planet Ice today with my daughters – I only manage to go twice a year. Will definitely be a regular when it opens in Cambridge and would be keen to take lessons myself. I should think this will be a really popular facility with students and the general population of Cambridge. Sarah

  15. When I was a young man I lived near Wembley and had the good fortune of being able to use the ice skating facility at the Empire Pool. I spent many hours skating during both daytime and evening sessions. I thoroughly enjoyed myself, it provided me with some of the finest exercise a bloke could ask for and unequalled fun. After I married, (early 60s) my wife on first thoughts was none too keen but after a couple of sessions on the ice was completely hooked. Many Saturday nights were spent watching and cheering on the Wembley Lions Ice Hockey team and it is difficult to describe the excitement. I vividly recall some of the players I.e. George Beech, Roy Shepherd, Vic Fildes, Elmer Pelto, Gordon English and the great Chick Zamick. After we moved to Cambridge way back I can remember attending a meeting of Councillors in 1974, talking about the future for Cambridge (amenities) At the time I suggested building an ice rink, there were howls of derision and bleats of “we don’t want that” How wrong they were, so now over 40 years later am highly delighted that these mediocrities, with the passage of time, have been replaced by people with foresight and modern ideas. Unfortunately I am now in my eighties so although I still have my “blades” am a bit past “cutting the ice” again. However, I congratulate you for embarking on this venture, and intend to pay a visit on your opening day later this year. Well done to all involved. About time!

  16. Lets hope it get built soon – I’ve been waiting for years. I started skating when I was 2 in Peterborough but my mum and dad decided to stop for a while to wait for the Cambridge rink as Peterborough is a bit far and now I am 5.
